Ahmad Jamal (1930–2023) was a Pittsburgh-born jazz pianist whose trademark was knowing when not to play, leaving space between notes and letting the music breathe. His elegant, relaxed style became hugely influential, particularly on Miles Davis, while his 1958 album At the Pershing: But Not for Me and its famous version of “Poinciana” introduced his sound to a much wider audience. Recording for more than six decades, Jamal released over 50 studio vinyl albums and remained an inventive, highly respected presence in jazz well into his later years.
