First rising to fame as the lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, he launched his solo career in 1977 and went on to release 14 studio albums, including classics such as Teddy, TP and It’s Time for Love. His run of five consecutive platinum albums in the late ’70s and early ’80s cemented him as a major R&B star, while songs like “Love TKO,” “Turn Off the Lights” and “Close the Door” remain soul staples.
