The Boomtown Rats were Ireland’s loud answer to punk rock, mixing rebellion with radio-friendly hooks. Formed in a small town near Dublin in 1975, they were six guys with something to say. Their frontman, Bob Geldof, had a wild mop of hair and a sharp tongue, turning real world headlines into hit songs. They made history with “Rat Trap”, the first UK No. 1 by an Irish band, and “I Don’t Like Mondays”, a haunting tune inspired by a tragic event that shocked the world. They weren’t afraid to stir things up, musically or politically. Geldof later helped launch Live Aid, proving that rock stars could do more than party, they could change lives.
