Mahavishnu Orchestra were a groundbreaking jazz fusion group formed in New York in 1971 and led by guitarist John McLaughlin. Their music combined blistering electric guitar, violin, keyboards, bass and powerhouse drumming into something that sounded far more intense than traditional jazz. The original lineup featured McLaughlin, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, Rick Laird and Billy Cobham, and their explosive early records The Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire became defining albums of the fusion era. Across their career, Mahavishnu Orchestra released 8 studio albums, including the posthumously issued The Lost Trident Sessions, recorded in 1973 but not released until 1999.
