Birds Of Fire is Mahavishnu Orchestra at their most explosive: a whirlwind of electric guitar, violin, keyboards, bass and Billy Cobham’s ferocious drumming, all packed into just 40 minutes. Released in 1973, it was the second studio album from the original lineup and their final studio record together. John McLaughlin wrote every composition, including the furious title track and the nearly 10-minute “One Word,” while “Miles Beyond” pays tribute to McLaughlin’s former bandleader Miles Davis. For anyone curious about where jazz and progressive rock music collide, this is one of those vinyl records that helped define the sound.

Genre/s: Jazz Fusion, Progressive Rock
For Fans Of: Return to Forever, King Crimson, Jeff Beck
