Portrait captures The 5th Dimension at a fascinating point in their evolution, balancing their polished pop harmonies with funk, soul and more adventurous material. Released in 1970, it was their first album for Bell Records and features the memorable “Puppet Man,” Laura Nyro’s “Save the Country,” a soulful take on “Feelin’ Alright?” and, most famously, “One Less Bell to Answer,” with Marilyn McCoo delivering one of the group’s signature performances. Produced by Bones Howe and recorded in Hollywood with some of L.A.’s finest studio musicians, Portrait is a colorful snapshot of the group moving beyond their earlier sunshine-pop sound.
