Something New is one of those fascinating Beatles records that makes perfect sense once you know the story behind it. Released in the U.S. by Capitol Records in July 1964, it was put together while the band were at the height of Beatlemania and riding the success of A Hard Day’s Night. Rather than being a straight soundtrack, the album mixes songs from the film with tracks that American fans hadn’t heard yet, including the energetic covers “Slow Down” and “Matchbox,” plus the German-language “Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand.” The result is a lively snapshot of The Beatles in transition from their early rock ’n’ roll sound toward the more melodic, adventurous songwriting that would soon define their classic albums. It reached No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard album chart and stayed there for nine weeks, making it a particularly appealing piece of original-era Beatles vinyl for collectors and fans of their 1960s sound.
