The Carpenters’ Passage, released in 1977, finds Karen and Richard Carpenter stretching beyond their signature easy listening sound into a more adventurous mix of pop, theatrical ballads, and space age music. From the catchy warmth of “All You Get from Love Is a Love Song” to their wonderfully unusual, sci-fi inspired version of “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft,” the album offers plenty of surprises while keeping Karen’s unique voice at its heart. With its bold musical variety and slick arrangements, Passage is an intriguing chapter in The Carpenters career and a rewarding find for listeners who enjoy classic ’70s pop with a twist.
