Depeche Mode’s Exciter finds the band entering the new millennium with a darker, more spacious sound that feels both electronic and amazingly human. Released in 2001, it was their tenth studio album and the first since Ultra, with acclaimed electronic producer Mark Bell (LFO) behind the controls. Tracks like “Dream On,” “Freelove,” and “I Feel Loved” balance moody synths, unusual electronic textures, acoustic guitar, and Dave Gahan’s unique vocals. Rather than chasing the sound of their earlier classics, Exciter takes a more atmospheric and stripped-back approach, making it an especially interesting listen on vinyl. It’s a great choice for fans who enjoy Depeche Mode’s darker side and also appreciate experimental electronic production.
