Coltrane, released in July 1962, is one of those albums where you can feel John Coltrane stretching his wings, diving deep into modal jazz, yet keeping it soulful and grounded. Recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio, the album features his classic quartet of McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. It’s got a spiritual pulse without being too heavily weighted, and tracks like “Out of This World” and “Tunji” show Coltrane’s knack for turning simple melodies into emotional journeys. “Tunji,” by the way, was a tribute to Nigerian drummer Babatunde Olatunji, which proves that Coltrane’s influences were global even back then. The album didn’t get much love when it first dropped, but over time it’s become a quiet giant in his catalog. It’s thoughtful, intense, and full of heart. You can hear a man searching, not just for new sounds, but for deeper meaning.
