    After the Gold Rush is Neil Young’s haunting postcard from the verge of the ’70s. It's a mix of acoustic soul-searching and raw electric grit. Released in 1970, it’s like Young cracked open the diary to his soul and let the melodies spill out. The title track feels like a dream sequence, drifting through medieval scenes, present-day chaos, and a sci-fi future where only a chosen few escape Earth. He wrote much of it while holed up in Topanga Canyon, inspired by a never-made movie script about an ecological disaster. The album’s got everything: heartbreak (“Only Love Can Break Your Heart”), protest fire (“Southern Man”), and even a cover of “Oh, Lonesome Me” that sounds like it’s been through a storm. A fun fact is that Nils Lofgren played piano on it without really knowing how, which somehow made the whole thing even more magical. This album could be described as a mood, a message, and a mirror!
