This sixth studio album from UFO marked a turning point for the band. Released in 1977, it shows off a more polished production while still keeping their raw edge. Recorded at AIR Studios in London and produced by Ron Nevison, Lights Out introduced string arrangements and more complex song structures, giving something new for the group at the time. It’s got a mix of punchy rockers like “Too Hot to Handle” and emotional slow-burners like “Try Me,” which added a surprising layer of vulnerability. The title track “Lights Out” became a fan favorite, especially in its live version, and was written as a rebellious, anti-authoritarian anthem. The album even includes a cover of “Alone Again Or” by the band Love, giving it a psychedelic twist. With Michael Schenker’s fiery guitar work and Phil Mogg’s commanding vocals, the album climbed to number 23 on the U.S. Billboard charts. This was UFO’s highest charted release in America. Though it didn’t earn a gold record, it became a cult classic, especially among fans in cities like Chicago where the band had a strong following. Lights Out is one of those albums that punches through the speakers with attitude and heart.
