Dan Hicks’ 1973 album Last Train to Hicksville…The Home of Happy Feet is a quirky, roots-driven record made with his band the Hot Licks, blending swing, folk, blues, and country into a relaxed acoustic sound that felt different from most rock albums of the early ’70s. The record runs about 37 minutes with 13 tracks and highlights Hicks’ laid-back vocal style, witty lyrics, and tight harmony singing from bandmates Maryann Price and Naomi Eisenberg. Songs like “Cowboy’s Dream No. 19,” “Payday Blues,” and the playful remake “‘Long Come a Viper” show the group’s mix of vintage jazz swing and Americana storytelling, often carried by violin, guitar, bass, and light percussion instead of heavy electric rock instruments. The album also became the final release by the original Hot Licks lineup before Hicks dissolved the group later in 1973, making it a kind of closing chapter for that era of the band.
