    A raw, bluesy sample of the Grateful Dead at the Fillmore East, History of the Grateful Dead, Vol. 1 (Bear’s Choice) captures the band during two legendary New York shows on February 13–14, 1970. Curated by The Dead’s legendary soundman Owsley “Bear” Stanley, the album moves from laid back acoustic numbers like “Dark Hollow” and “Katie Mae” into heavier, freewheeling performances such as the 18-minute “Smokestack Lightnin’” and the hard-charging “Hard to Handle.” Ron “Pigpen” McKernan is especially important here, with the record serving as a fitting showcase for his blues and R&B style. Originally released in 1973, it was intended to be the first in a series of historical live releases, making this vinyl record a particularly interesting piece of The Dead’s early live recording history.
