    Jefferson Airplane Takes Off is where one of San Francisco’s most important psychedelic rock bands first put its sound on vinyl. Released in 1966, the debut blends folk, blues, and early psychedelic rock, with Marty Balin handling most of the lead vocals alongside Signe Anderson, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, and original drummer Skip Spence. Songs like “It’s No Secret,” “Tobacco Road,” “Let’s Get Together,” and “Chauffeur Blues” show a band still finding its direction, but already sounding fresh, energetic, and distinctly different from mainstream rock of the day. It only reached #128 in the U.S. at the time, but today it’s an important piece of the story behind the San Francisco psychedelic explosion that followed.
