    John Mayall – USA Union is a fascinating left turn from the British blues sound that made John Mayall famous. Recorded in Los Angeles in July 1970 with an entirely American lineup, with Harvey Mandel on guitar, Larry Taylor on bass and Don “Sugarcane” Harris on electric violin, this album has a looser, more spacious blues sound with a touch of jazz and rock. One of its coolest features is what’s missing: there are no drums, leaving plenty of room for Mandel’s guitar, Harris’s distinctive violin and Mayall’s harmonica, keyboards and vocals to carry the music. Tracks like “Nature’s Disappearing,” “Night Flyer” and “Deep Blue Sea” show Mayall experimenting rather than simply repeating his classic Bluesbreakers formula. A great pick for listeners who like their blues relaxed, exploratory and full of character.
