Kenny Loggins’ Nightwatch, released in 1978, is a look back in to the golden age of soft rock. It’s his second solo album and arguably his most successful, peaking at number 7 on the Billboard 200. The standout track, “Whenever I Call You ‘Friend’,” is a duet with Stevie Nicks that blends Loggins’ smooth vocals with Nicks’ ethereal edge, like honey meeting smoke. The album also features the first ever released version of “What a Fool Believes,” co-written with Michael McDonald, which later became a massive hit for the Doobie Brothers. Nightwatch is a showcase of Loggins’ transition from mellow folk-pop to a more polished, radio-friendly rock sound. With lush string arrangements by Bob James and a band that feels tight but never rigid, this album manages to sound intimate, expansive, mysterious, and totally unforgettable.
