Back to the Country is Loretta Lynn doing what she did best: taking real life subjects and turning them into plainspoken, memorable country songs. Released in 1975 on MCA, the album is best known for “The Pill,” one of Lynn’s most controversial and talked about recordings, which tackled birth control from a woman’s point of view and was banned by some radio stations. The record mixes traditional Nashville country with a little more edge, while songs like “Paper Roses,” “You Love Everybody But You,” and the title track give the album plenty of variety. It reached #2 on the Billboard country albums chart, making this a particularly strong pick for anyone wanting Loretta at her fearless, outspoken best.
