Climax, released in 1974, is an unusual moment in the Ohio Players’ catalog because it wasn’t a brand new studio project. It was actually released as a collection of leftover tracks from their earlier Westbound studio sessions, right as the band was already moving on to a new label. Even so, it plays like they are sharpening their funk sound, mixing gritty jams with unexpected covers like CCR's “Proud Mary” and Marvin Gaye's “What’s Going On.” Only a handful of the songs were actually new at the time, but the album still shows how tight and inventive the group was. They turned what could’ve been a throwaway release into something that feels lively, raw, and full of personality.
