Ricky Skaggs’ Waitin’ for the Sun to Shine is a landmark album that helped bridge traditional bluegrass with mainstream country in a way that felt fresh but still rooted. Released in 1981, it marked Skaggs’ debut with Epic Records and showed off his knack for blending heartfelt vocals with crisp instrumentation. The album packs ten tracks into just under half an hour, each one a tight, twangy showcase of Skaggs’ multi-instrumental talent. He produced the album himself and played on every song. It spun off several hits, including “Crying My Heart Out Over You” and “Don’t Get Above Your Raising’,” which climbed the country charts and introduced a wider audience to his neo-traditionalist style. Recorded in Nashville and polished just enough for radio, and it helped set the stage for Skaggs’ rise as a major figure in country music throughout the 1980s.
