Hero And Heroine captures the Strawbs at a fascinating turning point, combining their folk roots with a heavier, more dramatic progressive rock sound. Released in 1974, it was recorded in Copenhagen and features the rebuilt lineup of Dave Cousins, Dave Lambert, Chas Cronk, Rod Coombes, and keyboardist John Hawken. The album opens with the ambitious eight-minute “Autumn” and moves between acoustic warmth, powerful guitars, Mellotron, synthesizers, and darker lyrical themes. The title track is the centerpiece, while “Just Love” and “Round And Round” show the band stretching well beyond their earlier folk-rock identity. A strong pick for listeners who enjoy melodic prog rock with plenty of atmosphere.
