Damn the Torpedoes is the album where Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers went from being just a great classic rock band to a major American staple. Released in 1979, their third studio album is packed with the kind of songs that made Petty so hard to beat, like “Refugee,” “Here Comes My Girl,” “Even the Losers” and “Don’t Do Me Like That”, all built around sharp guitars, big hooks and lyrics that sound straightforward but stick with you. Produced by Petty and Jimmy Iovine, the record took the band’s mix of rock, blues, country and folk and polished it without taking away the grit. Put simply, this is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers firing on all cylinders, making great American rock with no filler.
