Released in January 1984, this album was the first official step for Jon Bon Jovi and his crew, recorded at Power Station Studios in New York, a place co-owned by Jon’s cousin, Tony Bongiovi, who also co-produced the record. The album blends glam metal and hard rock with a pop edge, laying the groundwork for the band’s signature sound. “Runaway,” the breakout single, was actually recorded before the band fully formed, using studio musicians, and it unexpectedly won a local radio contest that launched Bon Jovi into the spotlight. The rest of the album features tracks like “She Don’t Know Me,” which is the only song in their catalog not written by a band member, and “Shot Through the Heart,” which, despite its title, isn’t the same song as their later mega-hit “You Give Love a Bad Name.” The album didn’t explode on the charts, peaking at number 43 in the U.S., but it sold over two million copies and gave Bon Jovi the momentum they needed to dominate the rock scene in the years to come. It’s a raw, energetic introduction to a band that was clearly hungry for more, and they got it.
