    Hotter Than Hell, released in 1974, is Kiss’s second studio album and it’s got that gritty, streetwise energy that feels like it was recorded in a alley behind a strip joint. The band had just moved their recording operation to Los Angeles, and they weren’t exactly loving the change. Paul Stanley’s guitar got stolen on day one, and the whole vibe was a little off. That tension shows up in the music, which is darker and heavier than their debut album. Tracks like “Parasite” and “Watchin' You” push the envelope, with twisted lyrics and murky production that somehow works in their favor. Ace Frehley wrote some killer riffs but didn’t sing yet, as he was still building confidence, so Gene and Peter took the mic on his songs. The album cover looks like a Japanese comic book exploded at a rock photo shoot, and it clearly stood out when it got released. Even though it didn’t light up the charts, Hotter Than Hell laid down the raw blueprint for Kiss’s rise to rock royalty. It just has that REALLY, REALLY RAW 70's hard rock vibe, which personally, makes it my favorite Kiss album!
