Poco’s Indian Summer is one of those records that sits right at the crossroads of smooth West Coast harmony and laid-back country rock polish. It captures the band in a transitional moment. They are still rooted in their signature pedal steel and vocal harmonies, but leaning more toward a slick, pop-leaning sound that would soon push them closer to mainstream success. The title track is the standout, warm and nostalgic, with steel guitar lines that feel like late-afternoon sunshine, while the rest of the album balances soft rock storytelling with subtle experimental touches, including synth textures that were unusual for the band at the time. It also ended up being the final studio record album before key members Timothy B. Schmit and George Grantham left, making it a quiet turning point in Poco’s long career.
