    Hard Labor by Three Dog Night, released in 1974, was bold and experimental. The album cover alone caused a stir, as it originally showed a surreal “birth” of a vinyl record, complete with surgical tools and a puppet-like mother. This freaked out enough people that the label slapped a giant Band-Aid over it. Musically, the band switched producers for this one, bringing in Jimmy Ienner, which gave the album a more theatrical and polished vibe. You’ll hear less of their usual group harmonies and more solo vocals, which some fans loved and others missed. Tracks like “The Show Must Go On” and “Sure As I’m Sittin’ Here” show off their knack for turning quirky covers into radio gold. This album is gritty, gutsy, and just a little bit chaotic in the best way.
