Stormwatch finds Jethro Tull looking out at a changing world with a darker, more serious mood than the albums that came before it. Released in 1979, it completes the band’s loose folk-rock trilogy that began with Songs from the Wood and continued with Heavy Horses, but here the countryside gives way to storms, the sea, climate, and concerns about the environment. “North Sea Oil” takes aim at offshore drilling, while the nine-minute “Dark Ages” gives this vinyl album one of its most powerful and atmospheric moments. With Ian Anderson’s flute, Martin Barre’s guitars, strong acoustic elements, and plenty of keyboard color, Stormwatch feels like Tull bracing for the future, and it also became the final album featuring the band’s classic late-’70s lineup.
