A Rose Is Still A Rose (The Remixes) is a great example of Aretha Franklin meeting the dance floor in the late 1990s. Released in 1998 as a 2×12"vinyl set, it takes “A Rose Is Still A Rose” and hands it over to some of the era’s best known remixers, including Hex Hector, Johnny Vicious and Love To Infinity. Instead of simply repeating the album version, these mixes stretch the song into full-length club workouts, with longer intros, extended grooves, dubs and instrumental passages designed for DJs. There were so many versions because Arista was effectively targeting different radio formats, DJs, clubs and dance audiences. The song was crossing R&B, hip-hop and dance territory, so different mixes gave it a chance to work in very different settings. For collectors, this 2×12" is much more than a remix, it captures Aretha embracing the club culture of the late ’90s while still putting that legendary voice at the center.
