Aretha Franklin’s "Aretha" is the Queen of Soul stepping confidently into the glossy pop and R&B sound of the 1980s. Released in 1986 on Arista, it followed the success of Who’s Zoomin’ Who? and teamed Franklin again with producer Narada Michael Walden. The album’s big moment is “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” her hugely successful duet with George Michael, while “Jimmy Lee,” “Rock-A-Lott” and her energetic take on the Rolling Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” show that Aretha was more than capable of keeping up with the decade’s modern production. It’s a slicker, more contemporary Aretha Franklin than her classic Atlantic recordings. Her extraordinary voice and her ability to make almost any song sound like her own, remains front and center.
