Abacab is Genesis at a crossroads, where the band deliberately stripped back their old, intricate prog style and rebuilt their sound around groove, rhythm, and experimentation. Released in 1981 after they became a trio, it captures a looser, more spontaneous approach, where many songs were shaped from jam sessions rather than tightly written pieces. The result is an album that feels both minimal and adventurous, mixing sharp pop instincts with odd structures and textures, from the title track’s shifting sections to the brass-driven “No Reply at All.” It became one of their biggest releases at the time, proving they could evolve without losing their identity.

Genre/s: Progressive Rock, Pop Rock
For Fans Of: Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, Yes
Official Release Date: September 18, 1981
Notes: First album they recorded entirely as a trio (Phil Collins, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford). This album was the “bridge” album between their prog rock roots and mainstream pop rock success.
